The exhibition

Liza Merlin’s “Place Memories” at Melina Merkouri Cultural Arts Centre, Athens. Curated by Iris Kritikou. “Liza Merlin exhibits landscapes, oils and oil pastels from her recent travels to beloved places. A persistent traveler and fascinated collector of different images of places and cultures, she captures panoramas as well as detailed insets of the places she visited and loved, in the manner of colorful handmade postcards.” Iris Kritikou notes: “The new body of works by Lisa Merlin pulsates from the convergence of image and feeling, from the desire to capture and restore a magical, shining point that once met the traveler’s gaze and was captured by his mind. It is born from the need to share and to tangibly recount the days, hours and moments that define the fluid but undeniably distinct condition of another place, the different charming tone from that of everyday life at home. It is articulated with color and light, with an impressionistic aesthetic mood, design precision, extraordinary plasticity with selective miniaturization and harmonious fullness. And it is completed through the need to rescue the memory, the haze and the distinctive aroma of the place, when the place will have finally disappeared from sight and its journey will be a memory.”
